To borrow a line from A Tale of Two Cities, It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. Hardly a day goes by without headlines about climate change, 环境恶化, socioeconomic inequality 和 policy failure. 然而对公正的渴望, sustainable society 和 the rapid development of new technologies in renewable energy 和 AI offer hopes 和 业务 opportunities. One thing for sure is that what we choose to do (or not to do) at this particular juncture of history is bound to have long-lasting implications for many generations to come. 这门跨学科的课程, to be co-taught by the core faculty members of the 席勒电子游戏正规平台所, will focus on the intersection of climate science, 可持续增长, 绿色技术和政策行动. It is designed specifically to provide students with a comprehensive, yet in-depth overview of the complex interrelationships between these four key areas 和 how they may interact to shape the future of our planet.

The course is inspired partly by four recent Nobel Prizes (hence the title), 这是物理学(2021年), 和平(2007), 化学(2023)和经济学(2018), 并帮助固定主要单位. The first unit starts with an overview of the scientific evidence for climate change 和 its causes, as well as the current state of energy production, 消费与技术. 在第二单元, students will then learn about the challenges 和 opportunities associated with transitioning to a more sustainable economy, nature-based solution to climate change. As part of the 席勒电子游戏正规平台所's leadership of the BC@UNCOP programming, 代表团选择, 和管理, we offer a one-credit fall semester course that provides an academic overview of the UN Climate Change Conference (COP) from a historical, 政治, 还有social视角.

The course is required for student members of BC’s official delegation traveling to the Conference of the Parties of the UNFCCC, 和 open to other interested students through departmental permission.

The fall 2024 version of this course will be facilitated by the two faculty co-leads for the COP29 delegation along with guest faculty.

The 席勒电子游戏正规平台所 for Integrated Science 和 Society will be offering our community engaged course sequence again in 2025. 

Throughout the course, students develop skills in:

The course is team-based with a small interdisciplinary group of students who are selected for the spring/summer course through an application process. 2024年夏天, students went on a three week immersive trip to Zanzibar, Tanzania where they worked with community partners 和 conducted ethnographic research.
